EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
