Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
