They're Doing in America What They Did within Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover as well.

The obvious and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of extreme compassion focused on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Finest Among Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it imply acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it represents both meekness and faith, a mixture that genuine national faithful should embrace.
