Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
